Junior Fresh Produce Buyer

Are you passionate about food, fresh produce and discovering what’s coming next?
Our client is looking for an enthusiastic and commercially minded Junior Fresh Produce Buyer to join their buying team.
This isn’t simply a role placing repeat orders with the same suppliers. We’re looking for someone naturally curious – someone who wants to discover new varieties, specialist growers, emerging food trends and exciting products that could add something different to our clients range.
You don’t necessarily need years of buying experience. Fresh produce, foodservice, wholesale, hospitality or purchasing experience would be an advantage, but attitude, commercial instinct and a genuine passion for food are equally important.
The role starts at 4:00am, reflecting the fast-moving nature of fresh produce and giving you the opportunity to be ahead of daily availability, pricing and market movements.The Role
You’ll support the day-to-day buying of fruit, vegetables and speciality produce while developing your commercial buying skills.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Monitoring daily availability, pricing, quality, seasonality and market conditions
- Supporting purchasing and supplier negotiations
- Identifying new growers, producers and suppliers
- Searching for new, unusual and on-trend fresh produce
- Keeping ahead of restaurant, chef, food and consumer trends
- Visiting markets, growers, suppliers and industry events
- Building strong relationships with existing and potential suppliers
- Identifying new product and commercial opportunities
- Working closely with Sales to understand what customers want
- Collaborating with Social Media to showcase seasonal produce, new arrivals and supplier stories
- Helping launch and promote new products
- Spotting emerging trends before they become mainstream
What We’re Looking For
We’re particularly interested in someone who:
- Is comfortable starting work at 4:00am
- Has a genuine passion for food and fresh produce
- Is naturally curious and enjoys discovering new products
- Has an interest in restaurants, chefs and emerging food trends
- Is commercially minded with a good head for numbers
- Is confident approaching and building relationships with suppliers
- Is proactive and willing to go looking for opportunities
- Can work effectively in a fast-moving environment
- Is organised and comfortable using spreadsheets and business systems
- Enjoys sharing ideas and working across Buying, Sales and Social Media
Experience within fresh produce, foodservice, wholesale, hospitality, purchasing or buying would be advantageous, but we are equally interested in people with the potential and enthusiasm to develop.
